My sister and I wrote this one together, too, and it probably needs a little polish, but we think it’s a sweet story about sisterhood and family and meeting the right person at the right time.
Samantha Silver, 32, is ABD (all but dissertation) in social work from a university in Brooklyn, living with her boyfriend, Ben. She grew up on Long Island, where her older sister Jessica (40) still lives with her high school sweetheart husband and their 15-year-old twins. Her younger sister, Lucy (28), lives in Brooklyn with her husband, Josh.
One night, after staying out late with a friend from her PhD program, Ben tells Samantha he thinks they should take a break from living together. Samantha is crushed.
Samantha ends up moving in with Lucy, then Jessica, as she attempts to write her PhD thesis. Meanwhile, her current job as instructor is in jeopardy, since she is taking so long to write. She does have one client, Brent, who she is helping with his crises.
One evening after drinking alone on Long Island, Samantha meets Jeremy, a local who moved to Colorado for college and is back in town to take care of his dying mother. They have a nice conversation, but when he asks for her number, she tells him she’s not in a place to be dating someone.
A few weeks later, after Lucy has had her baby, Samantha is out to dinner with Jessica and her family when she sees Jeremy walk into the restaurant.
They start up a romance, even though they know Jeremy is not staying long in New York. Samantha meets Jeremy’s mother, Fran, who seems to love Samantha. Everything is going well—as well as possible when your new boyfriend’s mother is dying of cancer, and then he’s going to move 2000 miles away.
Samantha defends her thesis and is granted her PhD. While Jeremy waits outside the classroom at the university, he is called to the hospital. Samantha meets him there and while he’s out of the room, Fran tells her she’s never seen Jeremy this happy with a girl, and she’s sure Jeremy loves Samantha.
Later that night, after leaving a party to celebrate Samantha’s PhD, Jeremy gets a call from the hospital that his mother has died. At his mother’s house after the funeral, Jeremy’s aunt tells Sam that Jeremy hopes Samantha will move to Colorado with him, which is not something they discussed. They get into an argument, and Samantha leaves.
They end up taking a few weeks away from each other, during which time Samantha gets her job back and thinks about moving out of Jessica’s house. She runs into Ben at a bar in Manhattan and he tells her how much she hurt him, how he didn’t think they should break up, but just take things slowly and not live together. She realizes that she and Jeremy have had a similar misunderstanding.
Samantha rushes to his mother’s house, which is being cleaned out and has a “For Sale” sign on the lawn. She tells him how sorry she is, and how much she missed him, and how she’s bought a ticket to Colorado.
At the end, we see Samantha setting up a new therapy practice, with a view of the Rocky Mountains out the window.
