The story for this screenplay was written by my sister, Sarah Kono, our high school classmate, Marissa DeAngelis, and me. Sarah and I wrote the screenplay. We are currently looking for representation to take this out to producers or talent, or an independent producer interested in making this film.
It’s senior year for artsy ALICE and sporty HANNAH, who’ve been best friends since middle school, despite the fact that their mothers, EMMY and KAREN, are estranged best friends, having been driven apart 30 years ago by a disastrous end to Sports Nite, an extremely popular sporting event at the local high school. Alice feels a little in Hannah’s shadow, but doesn’t usually mind.
On the first day of school, the new high school principal, JULIA, recently promoted from Assistant Principal, has decided the best way to bring back some school spirit—and some needed cash—is to reinstate Sports Nite. The twist? She’s one of Karen and Emmy’s classmates from 1989, and was passed over for Gold Team captain. Oh, yeah, she’s still nurturing a grudge. She appoints Alice and Hannah to be captain of the Blue and Gold teams respectively, in a long-simmering revenge strategy.
Hannah confidently chooses her team and she’s pretty sure she’ll win, and she thinks it won’t really matter to Alice if she does—that’s what Hannah does, she wins. Alice’s self-consciousness gets in the way of her being a good team captain, until SUSAN, the weirdo school librarian, also a classmate of Karen, Emmy, and Julia, swoops in to help Alice manage her team, and her friendship with Hannah.
When Alice starts to improve, and Hannah starts to get nervous about winning, one of the core principles of their friendship is tested: that Hannah will be the star, and that Alice will always be waiting for her in the wings. They have a huge blow-out fight.
Meanwhile, Susan discovers a videotape that she made as the head of the AV Club on the night of Sports Nite 1989, which shows that it was actually Julia who sabotaged the event, including setting fire to the gymnasium. She shares this with Emmy and Karen, and they realize that their decades-long feud was built on a huge misunderstanding.
Alice decides that Sports Nite isn’t worth losing her friendship with Hannah, and she quits. It’s Hannah who convinces her to return. The twist? The two of them turn to Susan to help them prepare for the final event.
On the big night, Julia gets carted away by the police, kicking and screaming, for attempted murder. The scene in the locker room before Sports Nite—one locker room this time, for both teams—is very different: no cocaine, no crazy pep talks, just yoga and hugs.
Alice and Hannah, their teams lined up behind them, grab each other’s hands and walk into the gym together as we fade to black.
TAG: Back at school, we see the principal’s office. The twist? It’s Susan who’s taken over.
